Prohibition of Alcoholic Beverages in United States

April 6th is known as New Beer's Eve, and April 7th is celebrated as National Beer Day. There's quite an interesting story behind the emergence of National Beer Day! From 1920 to 1933, the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages were prohibited in the United States. In fact, attempts to ban alcoholic beverages date back to the 19th century. Many communities voluntarily banned alcoholic beverages, although there was no law enforcing it yet. Various parties and communities worked to enact this law, known as "dry" laws, and the first resistance to this law came from the Beer industry! However, in 1920, the Volstead Act was enacted, prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages until the law was completely repealed by constitutional amendment on December 5, 1933.

The Birth of National Beer Day on April 7th

The Volstead Act was a law that prohibited beverages containing more than 0.5% alcohol. In 1933, the law was amended by the Cullen-Harrison Act to allow for the production of light beer. After signing the law, Franklin D. Roosevelt said these iconic words:

"I think this would be a good time for a beer."

The law went into effect on April 7, 1933, in other states, and people across America gathered outside breweries. On the first day alone, they consumed 1.5 million barrels of beer! Thus, April 7 became National Beer Day and April 6 became known as New Beer's Eve. However, this did not mean the complete end of alcohol prohibition in America; it was specific to beer. The law was fully repealed on December 5, 1933, which is celebrated as Repeal Day.

The First Celebration of National Beer Day

Have you ever heard of Justin Smith? Justin Smith: The Father of National Beer Day

On March 1, 2009, Smith was hanging out with his friends Jason Billups and Mike Connolly. Mike Connolly, holding a beer, said, "Happy Beer Day!" This was Smith's "Eureka moment". Smith asked himself, "Why is March 1 celebrated as Beer Day? This is a holiday specific to Iceland." Then Mike said, "Hey, we should start a National Beer Day for America, it deserves to have its own National Beer Day." At first, Smith wasn't keen on the idea, but then he found out about the change in the law on April 7. Untappd started a badge for National Beer Day in 2011 that really helped snowball the recognition.

With a background in law and public policy, Smith reached out to the governor and representatives in Virginia, and in 2019, the state of Virginia officially recognized April 7 as National Beer Day. As a result, every year on April 7, the hashtag #NationalBeerDay goes viral on social media.
